The fluttering of wings overhead in a flyway, the sense of responsibility of seeing injured birds, or the moments of releasing recovered birds can bring you closer to nature even in a hospital, where not only birds are treated, but sometimes also bats and hedgehogs.
In the centre of Hortobágy is the oldest bird hospital in Hungary, where injured or orphaned protected and specially protected bird species are rescued. The hospital building houses an exhibition on bird rescue, and the wards are home to recovering birds. The operating theatre is designed to allow visitors to see the treatments being carried out.
The bird park surrounding the hospital is home to permanently injured birds, mostly white storks, goshawks, owls and eagles. A playground made of natural materials is also a pleasant activity for families.
